Thad Hughes has been the Head Pro at Birchwood Swim and Tennis Club since 2004. He is currently the head coach for men's and women's varsity tennis at Sarah Lawrence College. Thad has also been teaching at Club Fit Briarcliff since 2013. He was the Director of Tennis at the Westchester Indoor Tennis Club from 2002 to 2012. Thad received his P-1 level US Professional Tennis Association certification shortly after college and, prior to coming to the Northeast, taught for many years throughout the Southeast at various five-star resorts and country clubs. Thad attended the University of Nevada-Reno, a Division 1 school, with his best showing as runner-up in his division in the Big Sky Conference Championships. He started to play tennis competitively as a 10 year old and competed on state and national levels throughout his teenage years. He played in every national junior tennis tournament in the country from the 12 and under until the 18 and under levels. Thad obtained top five ranking in Florida and top ten in the nation during these years, with a semifinal showing in doubles at boys’ 16's Nationals in Kalamazoo. He trained under the legendary Australian Tennis Coach, Harry Hopman.

Gislaine Farias "Gi" has been the Assistant Pro since 2016, She graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC in May 2015, where she was selected to the All-CIAA Conference (Div. 2) tennis team from 2012 to 2015.  “G” is a PTR certified tennis professional and has been a tennis teaching pro since 2008. She is the tennis pro at Westchester Turf and Tennis the coach for the Hackley School Middle School team. She previously worked at Brynwood Golf and Country Club in Armonk in 2015, and at Windridge Tennis & Sport Camp in Vermont in the summers of 2013-14, Camp Robindel in in New Hampshire in 2012, and at B Sports Tennis & Fitness in Brazil prior to that.  She grew up in Brazil and was ranked number 1 in the state of Sao Paulo in 2009-10.

Matt Evans lives in Crestwood and is currently the Assistant Tennis Coach at Sarah Lawrence College.  He grew up playing tennis in Massachusetts and played in college for Saint Michael's (Division 2) in Vermont.  He's been a tennis instructor at The Tennis Club at Grand Central, NYU and continues to teach privately.  When he's not on the court, he's spending lots of time outside with his wife and 10-year-old son.

2019 Junior Tennis Staff

Jayden Carrillo has been playing tennis since she was three. She's competed in USTA tournaments throughout the year as well as her high school matches. Jayden has been a member of the Yorktown High School team since 9th grade and will be the senior captain this fall. For the last four years she's been an instructor to elementary school students in Shrub Oak. Her goal is to earn all-league honors with plans to be playing tennis in college next year.  

Alessio Sigillo joins the Junior tennis staff having played tennis for over a decade.  She has been playing on her high school varsity tennis team since the eighth grade and has earned All-League honors four years in a row.  She trains at Club Fit Briarcliff and is an active participant in USTA tournaments, and teaches a clinic with special needs clients on weekends.  

Stephie Shen is a college sophomore who began playing tennis at 8 years old. When she attended Horace Greeley High School, she was a co-captain of the women’s JV "A" Tennis team and member of the Women’s Varsity Tennis team in her junior and senior years. Currently, she is ranked as 1st doubles and 2nd singles player on the Sarah Lawrence College Women’s Varsity Tennis team. In addition to tennis, Stephie is involved in other sports including volleyball, track and field, and college-level ultimate frisbee. 

 

Jamie Fine will be a senior at Horace Greeley High School this fall. She is on the varsity tennis, softball and ski teams. This is her second year teaching tennis at Birchwood.

Zachery Andrews attends Horace Greeley and plays on their tennis team. He has competed in USTA and UTR tournaments since the age of 12. He's trained with the Armonk International Academy and Saw Mill Edge Program. During the past few summers he's trained at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, Zachery has competed in internationally with the Tennis Europe Program. Additionally, he's the Founder of the Special Connection Tennis Program (SCTP) which teaches tennis to children with autism and Down Syndrome.

Jacob Miller returns to Birchwood for his third summer, and plays on the Horace Greeley Varsity Tennis team. Jacob trains at Armonk Indoor Tennis Academy, and in the past he has competed in many USTA tournaments. During the school year, Jacob Is also a member of the Junior Staff at Chestnut Ridge Racquet Club. Jacob will be entering his senior year at Greeley this upcoming fall.

Sam Mikesell is a rising junior at Horace Greeley High School Birchwood member.  He has been working at Chestnut Ridge Tennis Club and volunteering at the Mount Kisco Boys and Girls Club. He is a member of both the HGHS tennis and soccer teams and the Make A Wish club at HGHS.

Hank Quinn was a player and teaching pro well known on the tennis circuit in the pre-Open era. He was the coach of the victorious US Davis Cup team in 1948. Hank was the first tennis pro at Birchwood starting with the club opening in 1961 and served for two and a half decades through the mid 1980s. For these reasons, the Birchwood Tennis Hut and Club Championship Trophy are named in honor of Hank Quinn.
